Welcome to Block Central's Seasonal Block Swap, "Pretty Kitty"!

View blocks from our Fall 2005 Swap here!

Pattern:  Any cat or kitty block pattern is acceptable. Blocks can be traditional pieced, paper-pieced, or appliqued.  If you use fusible applique, please sew the raw edges of the applique down using a satin stitch or buttonhole stitch.  Blocks can be enhanced with embroidery, but must not be an embroidered design on background fabric only. Here are some 6" pattern suggestions to get you started:

  • Linda's Kitties - a wonderful set of kitty blocks designed by one of our Pretty Kitty Swappers, Linda Olivera!
  • Bowtie Kitty in a Basket - paper pieced from Beth Maddocks at Piece By Number.
  • Pretty Kitty - 6" paper pieced block from BlockCentral.com. This is a .pdf file.  Please measure to make sure that it prints out 6-1/2" (including seam allowances.)
  • Cat - paper pieced from Ginger Glaser.
  • Cat - pieced block pattern from CompuQuilt.
  • Cat In Bag - applique block from Moira McSpadden.  (Scroll down to the middle of the page for the link.)
  • Cat Profile - paper pieced from Ginger Glaser.
  • Mama Cat and Baby in Basket - paper pieced from Piece By Number.
  • Kitty Love - paper pieced from Pieced By Number.
  • Tesselcats - paper pieced pattern from Marcia Hohn's Quilter's Cache.
  • Thomasina the Cat - paper pieced pattern by Nancy Thomas.  From Quilt Magazine.  (This is a .pdf file.)

We have lots more cat pattern ideas in the links section of the Pretty Kitty Discussion Group.  Click here to view the list.  (You'll need to be signed in to the group in order to access the list.)

Size:  6" finished (6.5" unfinished)  Please measure carefully!  Blocks that are not the correct size will be returned to the owner, unswapped.

Quantity:  Make 6 identical blocks for each set of blocks.  If you are making more than one set of blocks, please use different fabrics and pattern for each set.  Send in 5 blocks and keep one for yourself per set.  You'll get 5 blocks back for each set to add to the one that you keep for yourself, for a total of 6 blocks per set.

Colors:  Your choice.....think PRETTY!

Fabrics:  Fabrics must be good quality 100% cotton.  Please prewash your fabric before using.  All blocks in each individual set must use the same fabrics.

Paper-piecing:  If you paper-piece your cats, leave the paper on for stability during handling.  You can place your label on the paper.

To sign-up for the FALL 2007 Swap:

Send an email message to Betty Edwards by clicking here to let her know that you will be participating in the swap and how many sets (a set = make 6, keep 1, send in 5, get 5 different ones back) you wish to sign up for.  Deadline to register for Fall Swap is September 1, 2007.  Please join our email discussion group at Yahoo Groups.  This is the place to ask questions and get answers about our Kitty Swaps!

Mailing:

Label each block with your name, email address and source of the pattern.  (If your pattern came from a website, list the site's web address and the name of the designer.  If your pattern came from a book or commercial pattern, list the title and the designer's name.  If you designed the pattern yourself, let us know!  We'd love to ooh and aah over your creativity!)  You can use a label (attached to wrong side of the fabric only!) or you can baste your label to the edge of each block.  Do not use straight pins.

If you'd like to see an example of a swap label,

Place your blocks in a large ziplock-type bag and label the bag with your name, mailing address, and email address. Be sure to include your mailing address!  Make sure that you place EACH set (5 blocks) in a separate ziplock-type bag labeled with your name, mailing address, and email address.  This makes it much easier when I'm swapping the blocks!

Enclose a self addressed
stamped envelope.  Postage on the return envelope should equal the amount of postage on the envelope that you are sending. Place your name and address in the return address area.  International swappers are welcome to join in!  Just send fabric in lieu of postage along with your self-addressed envelope.

All Fall 2007 Swap blocks must be postmarked by October 1, 2007.  Blocks will be swapped and mailed out in approximately seven days.  The Swap Hostesses reserve the right to return blocks that are late, or that do not meet the guidelines of this swap.

The following are the dates and postmark deadlines for swaps:

Winter: Signup by December 1st; Blocks Postmarked by January 2nd!

Spring: Signup by March 1st; Blocks Postmarked by April 1st!

Summer: Signup by June 1st; Blocks Postmarked by July 1st!

Fall: Signup by September 1st; Blocks Postmarked by October 1st!

**If the Postmark Deadline falls on a Sunday or a Holiday, the next day will be the Postmark Deadline!***
