Part 1:

In Part 1, we will make thirteen Four Point quilt blocks.  Each will measure 9-1/2" x 9-1/2" unfinished.  When the blocks are sewn into the quilt, they will measure 9" x 9".

 

 

 

Step 1:  Sew a Very Dark 2-3/8" triangle to the left and right sides of a Dark 2-5/8" square, as shown below.  Press the seam allowances toward the Very Dark fabric.  Trim points.  Sew a Very Dark 2-3/8" triangle to the top and bottom of the same Dark 2-5/8" square.  Press the seam allowances toward the Very Dark fabric and trim points.  Make 13.  (This unit should measure 3-1/2" x 3-1/2".)

Step 2:  Sew a Dark 4-1/4" triangle and a Light 4-1/4" triangle together as shown below.  Press the seam allowance toward the Dark fabric and trim point.  Make 52.

Step 3:  Sew a Step 2 unit and a Very Dark 3-7/8" triangle together as shown below.  Press the seam allowance toward the Very Dark fabric and trim points.  Make 52.  (This unit should measure 3-1/2" x 3-1/2".)

Step 4:  Sew a Light 2" square to a Medium 2" square as shown below.  Press the seam allowance toward the darker fabric.  Make 52.  (This unit should measure 2" x 3-1/2".)

Step 5:  Sew a Step 4 unit to a Medium 2" x 3-1/2" rectangle as shown below.  Press the seam allowance toward the Medium rectangle.  Make 52.  ( This unit should measure 3-1/2" x 3-1/2".)

Step 6:  Arrange four Step 3 units, four Step 5 units, and a Step 1 unit as shown below.  Sew the units together to form three rows.  Press the seam allowances toward the Step 3 units for all rows.  Next, sew the rows together to finish the Four Point block.  Press the seam allowances away from the center row.  Make 13.  (The block should measure 9-1/2" x 9-1/2".)

Part 2:

In Part 2, we will make twelve Shoo-Fly quilt blocks.  Each will measure 9-1/2" x 9-1/2" unfinished.  When the blocks are sewn into the quilt, they will measure 9" x 9".

 

 

 

Step 7: Layer a Light 3-7/8" triangle on a Very Dark 3-7/8" triangle, right sides together.  Sew along the longest side and press the seam allowance toward the Very Dark fabric.  Trim points.  Make 48.  (This unit should measure 3-1/2" x 3-1/2".)

Step 8: Arrange four Step 7 units, four Medium 3-1/2" squares, and one Very Dark 3-1/2" square as shown below.  Sew the units together to form three rows.  Press the seam allowances toward the Medium squares for all rows.  Next, sew the rows together to finish the Shoo-Fly block.  Press the seam allowances toward  the center row.  Make 12.  (The block should measure 9-1/2" x 9-1/2".)

Part 3:

In Part 3, we will make the half-square triangles that make up the outer border of the quilt.  Each half-square triangle will measure 5-1/2"x 5-1/2" unfinished.  They will measure 5" x 5" when sewn into the quilt.

Step 9: Layer a Light 5-7/8" triangle on a Medium 5-7/8" triangle, right sides together.  Sew along the longest side and press the seam allowance toward the Medium fabric.  Trim points.  Make 16.  (This unit should measure 5-1/2" x 5-1/2".)

Step 10: Layer a Medium 5-7/8" triangle on a Dark 5-7/8" triangle, right sides together.  Sew along the longest side and press the seam allowance toward the Dark fabric.  Trim points.  Make 24.  (This unit should measure 5-1/2" x 5-1/2".)

Step 11:  Make a left/right border strip by sewing four Step 9 units and six Step 10 units together, as shown below.  Press the seam allowances to one side.  Make 2.  (Each border strip should measure 5-1/2" x 50-1/2".)

Step 12:  Make a top/bottom border strip by sewing four Step 9 units, six Step 10 units, and two Very Dark 5-1/2" squares together, as shown below.  Press the seam allowances to one side.  Make 2.  (Each border strip should measure 5-1/2" x 60-1/2".)

Part 4:

In Part 4, we will put the quilt together!

Step 13:  Sew four Four Point blocks and three Shoo-Fly blocks together as shown below:  Press seam allowances toward the Shoo-Fly blocks.  Make 3.  (Each row should measure 9-1/2" x 45-1/2".)

Step 14: Sew four Shoo-Fly blocks and three Four Point blocks together as shown below.  Press seam allowances toward the Shoo-Fly blocks.  Make 2.  (Each row should measure 9-1/2" x 45-1/2".)

Step 15: Sew the rows together as follows:  Step 13, Step 14, Step 13, Step 14, Step 13.  Press the seam allowances to one side.  

Part 5:

Now it's time to add the borders!

Step 16:  Sew a Very Dark 3" x 5-1/2" to a Very Dark 3" x 40-1/2"  along one short side to make a Very Dark 3" x 45-1/2" inner left/right border strip.  Press the seam allowance to one side.  Make 2.

Step 17:  Sew a Very Dark 3" x 10-1/2" to a Very Dark 3" x 40-1/2"  along one short side to make a Very Dark 3" x 50-1/2" inner top/bottom border strip.  Press the seam allowance to one side.  Make 2.

Step 18:  Sew the Step 16 border strips to the left and right sides of the quilt center.  Press the seam allowances toward the Step 16 border strips.

Step 19:  Sew the Step 17 border strips to the top and bottom of the quilt center.  Press the seam allowances toward the Step 17 border strips.

Step 20:  Sew a Step 11 left/right border strip to the left and right sides of the quilt.  Press the seam allowances toward the Step 16 border strips.

 

Step 21.  Sew a Step 12 top/bottom border strip to the top and bottom  of the quilt.  Press the seam allowances toward the Step 17 border strips.  Your quilt top is finished!

Part 6:

To finish the quilt, you will need to layer the quilt top, batting, and backing fabric and baste for the quilting method you prefer.

Bind the quilt with the Very Dark 2-1/2" fabric strips that were included in the cutting instructions.
