Cutting Instructions:

  • From dark blue fabric, cut four 3-7/8" squares.
  • From light blue fabric, cut three 3-7/8" squares.
  • From white fabric, cut one 3-7/8" square and eight 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles.
  • From yellow fabric, cut eight 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles.

Sewing Instructions:

Step 1:  Using a ruler and a water soluble marker, draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all the light blue 3-7/8" squares and the white 3-7/8" square.

Step 2:  With right sides together, layer a light blue 3-7/8" square on a dark blue 3-7/8" square and sew a 1/4" seam on each side of the diagonal line that you drew in Step 1.  Repeat two times more and cut apart on the diagonal lines. Press seams toward darker fabric.  Six dark blue/light blue half-square triangles made.

Step 3:  With right sides together, layer the white 3-7/8" square on a dark blue 3-7/8" square and sew a 1/4" seam on each side of the diagonal line that you drew in Step 1.  Cut apart on the diagonal lines. Press seams toward darker fabric.  Two dark blue/white half-square triangles made.

Step 4:  With right sides together, layer a white 2" x 3-1/2" rectangle on an yellow 2" x 3-1/2" rectangle.  Sew a scant 1/4" seam along one long edge.  Repeat this step seven times more for a total of eight yellow/white squares.

Step 5:  Using the block above as your guide, place the half-square triangle units and yellow/white squares in order.  Using a scant 1/4" seam, sew them together to form rows and sew rows together to finish the block.
