Sewing Instructions: Step 1: Place a Color C (cream) 2-7/8" triangle on a Color B (brown) 2-7/8 triangle, right sides together. Sew along the longest edge using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seam allowance toward the Color B (brown) fabric and trim points. Make 8. (Each unit should measure 2-1/2".)
Step 2: Sew a Color D (pink) 2-7/8" triangle to the right end of a Color A (red) 5-1/4" triangle as shown below. Press the seam allowance toward the lighter fabric and trim points. Next, sew a Color D (pink) 2-7/8" triangle to the left end of the same Color A (red) 5-1/4" triangle as shown below. Press the seam allowance toward the lighter fabric and trim points. Make 4. (Each unit should measure 2-1/2" x 4-1/2".)
Step 3: Sew Color A (red) 1-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangle to the bottom of a Step 2 unit as shown below. Press the seam allowances away from the Step 2 unit. Make 4. (This unit should measure 3-1/2" x 4-1/2".)
Step 4: Sew a Color C (cream) 1-7/8" triangle to the right end of a Color A (red) 3-1/4" triangle as shown below. Press the seam allowance toward the lighter fabric and trim points. Next, sew a Color C (cream) 1-7/8" triangle to the left end of the same Color A (red) 3-1/4" triangle as shown below. Press the seam allowance toward the lighter fabric and trim points. Make 8. (Each unit should measure 1-1/2" x 2-1/2".)
Step 5. Sew two Step 4 units together as shown below. Press seam allowance to one side. Make 4. (Each unit should measure 1-1/2" x 4-1/2".)
Step 6: Sew a Step 5 unit to a Step 3 unit as shown below. Press seam allowance toward the Step 3 unit. Make 4. (This unit should measure 4-1/2" x 4-1/2".)
Step 7: Sew a Color C (cream) 2-7/8" triangle to the left and right ends of a Color E (lt brown) 3-3/8" square as shown below. Press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric and trim points. Next, sew a Color C (cream) 2-7/8" triangle to the top and bottom of the same Color E (lt brown) 3-3/8" square. Press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric and trim points. Make 1. (This unit should measure 4-1/2" x 4-1/2".)
Step 8: Arrange a Step 1 unit, a Color C (cream) 2-1/2" square, and a Color C (cream) 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangle as shown below. Sew the Color C (cream) 2-1/2" square and the Step 1 unit together and press the seam allowance toward the Color C (cream) 2-1/2" square. Next, add the Color C (cream) 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" cream rectangle as shown below. Press the seam allowance toward the Color C (cream) 2-1/2 x 4-1/2" rectangle. Make 4. (This unit should measure 4-1/2" x 4-1/2".)
Step 9: Arrange four Step 6 units, the single Step 7 unit, and four Step 8 units as shown below. Sew into three rows and press the seam allowances away from the Step 6 units. Next, sew the rows together to finish the block center. Press the seam allowances away from the center row. Make 1. (This unit should measure 12-1/2" x 12-1/2".)
Step 10: Sew a Step 1 unit to each short end of a Color E (lt. brown) 2-1/2" x 12-1/2" strip. Press the seam allowances away from the Step 1 units. Make 2. (This unit will measure 2-1/2" x 16-1/2".)
Step 11: Sew a Color E (lt. brown) 2-1/2" x 12-1/2" strip to left and right ends of the block center as shown by numbers 1 and 2 below. Press the seam allowances away from the block center. Next, sew a Step 10 unit to the top and bottom of the block center as shown by numbers 3 and 4 below. Press the seam allowances away from the block center. (Your block will measure 16-1/2" unfinished. It will measure 16" when it is sewn into a quilt.)
