Sewing Instructions: Step 1: Using a ruler and a rotary cutter, cut two Color E (cream) 4-7/8" squares and two Color B (red) 4-7/8" squares once diagonally.
Step 2: With right sides together, layer a Color E (cream) Step 1 triangle on a Color B (red) Step 1 triangle. Stitch together using a 1/4" seam. Press the seam allowance toward the darker fabric and trim points. Repeat three more times for a total of four Color E/B half-square triangles.
Step 3: Stitch a Color A (dk. blue) 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangle to a Step 2 half-square triangle as shown below. Press seam allowance toward the darker fabric. Repeat three more times for a total of four.
Next, sew a Color A (dk. blue) 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangle to the bottom of the half-square triangle as shown below. Press seam allowance toward the darker fabric. Repeat three more times for a total of four.
Step 4: Using a pencil and ruler, draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of eight Color C (green) 2-1/2" squares.
Place a Color C (green) 2-1/2" square on the right end of a Color E (cream) 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangle, right sides together. Stitch along the drawn line and trim the excess fabric 1/4" above the seam. Press the seam allowance toward the darker fabric and trim points. Next, place a Color C (green) 2-1/2" square on the left end of the Color E (cream) 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangle, right sides together. Stitch along the drawn line and trim the excess fabric 1/4" above the seam. Press the seam allowance toward the darker fabric and trim points. Repeat three more times for a total of four flying geese units.
Step 5: With right sides together and using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew a Color D (yellow) 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangle to a Step 4 flying geese unit as shown below. Press seam allowance toward the Color D rectangle. Next, sew a Color C (green) 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangle to the Color D (yellow) rectangle as shown below. Press the seam allowance toward the Color D (yellow) rectangle. Repeat three more times for a total of four.
Step 6: Following the diagram below, arrange the block units as shown below. Sew into rows and press seam allowances toward the center on the top and bottom row and away from the center on the center row. Sew rows together to finish the center block and press the seam allowances away from the center row.
Your block should measure 16-1/2" at this point. It will measure 16" when it is sewn into the quilt. |
