2003 Block of the Month Sashing & Borders Instructions

 Cutting Instructions:

For Sashing:  

  • From light blue fabric:  cut thirty-one 2" x 12-1/2" strips and twenty 3-1/2" squares.
  • From white fabric:  cut thirty-one 2" x 12-1/2" strips.

For borders:

  • From yellow fabric:  cut four 2-1/2" x 32" strips and four 2-1/2" x 26-1/2" strips.
  • From dark blue fabric:  cut four 5-1/2" x 34-1/2" strips and four 5-1/2" x 31-1/2" strips.

Sewing Instructions:

Step 1:  For sashing strips, layer a white 2" x 12-1/2" strip on a light blue 2" x 12-1/2" strip, right sides together.  Using a scant 1/4" seam, sew together along one long side.  Press seam allowance toward the light blue fabric.  Repeat thirty more times for a total of thirty-one 3-1/2" x 12-1/2" light blue/white sashing strips.

Step 2:  Lay out the blocks and sashing strips and squares as shown in Diagram 1 below:

Step 3:  Using a scant 1/4" seam, sew blocks, sashing strips, and squares into rows as shown in Diagram 2 below:

Step 4:  Sew the rows together to finish the inner portion of the quilt as shown in Diagram 3.
